7 Lower Elementary students hold hockey sticks and smile before a scrimmage

The Physical Education (PE) program at MdTL begins at the Elementary level. MdTL has designated outdoor space at the Terra Linda Rec Center for PE and free play for Lower and Upper Elementary students (1st-6th grade). Elementary students participate in formal PE one afternoon each week. Additionally, our PE Specialist supervises daily free play and supports students in organizing pick-up games.

A Montessori Approach to PE

The PE program at MdTL is designed to be fun and engaging while helping students develop basic skills and knowledge related to movement, teamwork, and fitness. Through games and sports, students build lasting friendships and enjoy shared experiences.

Each PE class begins with an icebreaker challenge, allowing students to interact playfully and begin engaging with one another. Once they are mentally engaged, students warm up through a game that incorporates movement and friendly competition. Whether a student wins or loses, everyone is encouraged to congratulate one another and immediately begin a new round. This teaches students that both winning and losing are natural—and temporary—parts of playing. It encourages resilience and helps students stay focused on the next opportunity rather than becoming fixated on the outcome of a previous round.

Following the warm-up, students participate in a circuit-style group exercise. Each week, they are introduced to new exercises with an emphasis on proper form and technique—skills that can benefit them in everyday life. These fun, energetic activities foster an environment in which students willingly give their best effort and explore the limits of their physical capabilities. Most of the exercises are done with partners, providing a natural source of support and motivation.

Toward the end of each session, students take part in a group game that requires collaboration to achieve a common goal. These activities focus on communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, and they often become the highlight of the class. Students enjoy the excitement of playing together while staying active.

After reaching this peak of energy and engagement, the class winds down with a brief cool-down period to help students transition calmly back to the indoor classroom environment.
