PROGRAMS - ELEMENTARY - MUSIC AND ART
Music and Art
The music in the elementary class builds upon the early music experiences in the primary class. Music is approached as a fully participatory experience as both part of the regular classroom and special activities. The program integrates the traditional Montessori music materials with the creativity and fundamental compositional skills developed by Carl Orff.

Art
Art is introduced both as an individual subject as well as an important part of any presentation. Maria Montessori said that art is a natural activity and a necessary one for the child. Learning about art is learning about the rich world of sensation, emotion, and personal expression. Through art children learn many things such as: aesthetics, how the world looks, how to express their knowledge and feelings, etc. Art gives children new ways of looking at things and enriches their imagination. This is of paramount importance for the development of their creative powers, which are as essential to a scientist, or inventor, or a writer as to an artist.
Our elementary art program reflects the Montessori philosophy of respect for the child's innate desire to learn and create. We strive to promote, preserve, and nurture the creative spirit by helping children discover their own creative resources. Emphasis is placed on the joy and discovery of the process of making art and to develop a positive attitude toward experimentation and problem solving. Our goal is to enable each child to:
- Gain knowledge of basic art elements, principles, and skills.
- Develop skills in the vocabulary of art.
- Appreciate the relationship between art and the natural world.
- Recognize the connection between artistic creativity and daily human experiences.
- Become familiar with contemporary and historical artists.
