Mathematics
Mathematics is presented in a scope and sequence that is prepared to best match the developing abilities of a child at this age. An elementary child possesses a mind that has the ability to judge, decipher, deduct, and reason, thus think abstractly. The critical component of learning is now not just the acquisition of facts, but manipulation and facilitation of numbers.
The elementary students formed a mathematical vocabulary and an understanding of numeration, counting, size, and shape in their primary years. This information, along with the use of the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, is continued and expanded upon with specially designed manipulative materials in the lower elementary. After lengthy exposure the children develop the ability to use the information and form their own abstraction. The journey from the concrete experiences and manipulative use of the materials in the lower elementary to abstract reasoning and calculation in the upper elementary allows each child to fully grasp difficult mathematical concepts. The scope and sequence meets or exceeds the California School Content Standards.
